This mandolin was built for my great friend and stupendous mandolin picker Scott McMillion, who now lives in Casper, WY. It features a Sitka spruce top, x-bracing, celluloid binding, varnish finish, and a cast Allen tailpiece. To hear Scott play a Skipper mandolin, visit our Audio Video page.

Construction Photos

I don't have very many construction photos of this instrument, but here's what I have. The rib assembly is constructed and the top is carved and glued to the ribs. The top is both tap and deflection tuned for maximum resonance and response and for proper stiffness.

The adjustments to these qualities are performed by shaving the tone bars. The back is carved and graduated in a similar manner.

The back and neck are completed, and the instrument is stained and finished with an oil varnish specially formulated for musical instruments.

Thanks for watching this project
