This stunning quilted maple/red spruce mandolin went to the owner of many Skipper instruments. The ebony fretboard and overlay features a fox-in-the-moonlight-with-tracks inlay that is set off by the stark white binding. This instrument was designed by Gerry Snelson, and that's evident in both looks and sound.

Construction Photos

The plates are joined and roughed out, and the rim assembly is constructed. The top is graduated and glued to the rim, and the tone bars are installed and tuned. The back is carved and graduated.

When the body is assembled, the binding is installed. The inlay is cut and recessed into the ebony. The peghead binding is applied.

The "tracks" inlay is recessed into the pegboard. The fretboard extender is constructed and stiffened with carbon fiber. The instrument is sanded, stained, and finished. How 'bout that quilted maple?
